Portsmouth & Southsea Fencing Club was established by the Navy in the early 1950s, open to all, with tuition given in all three weapons by Naval and Royal Marine instructors. One of the founding members of the club, Dr. Joan O’Connell, might still be remembered by fencers active around that time as the genial Irish doctor who organised the Portsmouth Open Foil Tournament for many years.
The club quickly gained a reputation for being welcoming and friendly, and this is a tradition we are proud to continue to this day. While the club is no longer run by the Navy, we maintain close links, and members of one are often to be found attending the other’s sessions.
